Educational training of HIV-positive adolescents

In December 37 boys and girls attended with their caregivers the MTAA Youth Friendly Program. They discussed challenges faced by the youths in school and at home. Most important was the sharing of testimonies and individual counseling.

Lessons learnt were:
Continuous sharing of testimonies reduces self-stigmatization;
The youngsters learn about their HIV-status too late (often when 18 years old), though they have taken medication their whole life;
It is important for caregivers and adolescents to learn about children’s rights on education, the right to parental care, to health care and non-discrimination;
Schoolteachers should be informed, so they willgive pupils time to take their drugs and go to the health facility.
