The 20th of October Gertrude Lwanga received official recognition for her work in the community. President Kenyatta acclaimed her – with 200 other people chosen from all over Kenya – a Shujaa (hero).
How does one become a Shujaa? Government officials pay visits to barasa’s (official gatherings in the village) and other meetings. They ask people at random: which person from the community has been of great influence in your life, whom do you like to be chosen as Shujaa? The name of Gertrude came on top!
